In 1992 the Town of Windsor voted to contract with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office for the provision of law enforcement services. The Sheriff's Office received its first contract in 1993 and in 2008 the Town Council voted to extend the Sheriff's Office law enforcement services contract for 10 more years.

In 2004, the City of Sonoma contracted with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office to provide law enforcement services. The Sonoma Police Department continues to provides the same high level of service it always has, and has added several new positions in response to the community needs. Under the direction of Chief of Police the department is staffed by two Sergeants, ten deputies, two Community Service Officers, and two administrative positions. A School Resource Officer is assigned to the Sonoma Valley School District and supports both the Police Department and the Sheriff’s Sonoma Valley Substation. The Police Department is also supported by a strong cadre of volunteers from the Sheriff’s Volunteers in Policing Services (VIPS) program.
